- If you have always wanted a wall of built-in bookshelves around your fireplace, you may be surprised to learn that this a doable project for many handy homeowners. Use good quality 3/4-inch plywood to construct your shelves, backing them with 1/4-inch plywood. Crown molding or other purchased trims can be used to create a neat, unified look. Paint or stain your bookshelves to match your fireplace mantle. Consider using kitchen base cabinets as the bottom of your bookshelves if you would prefer some closed storage.
- With a bit of forethought, you can use the bookshelves around your fireplace to store a variety of items in a neat and organized way. Use open lower shelves for wicker baskets. Place paperback books, CDs and DVDs in shallow baskets with the spines facing up. You can also use baskets on your fireplace shelves to hold children's toys, hobby supplies or magazines. Consider removing dust jackets from hardcover books for a more unified appearance. Save some space for decorative items to create a beautiful focal point for your living room, family room or den.
- Try using wallpaper, contact paper or fabric adhered with liquid starch to back your bookshelves or painting the backs of your shelves a distinct color. This can add interest to your space, especially in a neutral room. Avoid overcrowding the bookshelves around your fireplace. Leave some open space on the shelves and place some books horizontally and others vertically. A short stack of books topped with an attractive bowl or other decorative item is a nice accent on these shelves. Use some higher and some lower accents on your fireplace mantle and bookshelves. You might even consider mounting your television above the fireplace and using your bookshelves as a media center.
