Hi, I'm Hilary Talbott, acupuncture physician and clinical herbalist. Today, we will be discussing acupressure and numbness. Now, if you're experiencing numbness on your hands or feet, or a slight neuropathy, acupressure can be helpful sometimes to open the channels or meridians and regain a normal circulation. It is something that needs to be repeated throughout the day and over and over again to work but it can certainly be helpful. Now, I've shown you the Jing Well points from time to time, and I'm going to show them to you again. They are in the corners of the nail bed where the lowest part of the nail bed and the widest part of the nail bed would meet in a corner, and so on the pinky finger and each side of the nail bed tends to be a Jing Well point for the Small Intestine and Heart Channel. Now, these points are best stimulated with the tip of your fingernail so like almost a sharp sensation. So, you want to be careful if you have complete numbness because you wouldn't feel this, you could definitely scratch the skin, but over time by stimulating these points you should be able to feel this. The theory is is that it would open up the entire meridian down the hand, and then you would have some regain of circulation. Another technique that you can use is a Tui Na, or Chinese Massage Technique, called sweeping, and you just want to basically use the palm of your hand like this and sweep, just making contact with the skin, trying to increase circulation. Some people call this brushing and actually have you do it in the shower every morning with a brush and this is great even if you don't experience numbness but if you have poor circulation, this can be really helpful too. So, the sweeping or brushing technique in conjunction with stimulating the Jing Well Points of the tips of the fingernail beds can be really helpful for overcoming numbness. I encourage you to seek out your local acupuncture physician so that you might try acupuncture and get a quicker response but in the meantime, I encourage you to try these techniques on yourself. I'm Hilary Talbott, and that was acupressure for numbness.
