"Hello. My name is Susan Summons and I'm a college basketball coach here at Miami Dade College Kendall Campus. I'd like to give you some advice on how to become a basketball coach. You have to be willing to work. It's a lot of work. But you know what you have to be willing to have fun. Because basketball and coaching is fun. It doesn't matter whether you want to be a coach at the middle school level, the youth league, community college, university or pro basketball coach. You have to be willing to work hard. You've got to get out there and volunteer folks. You've got to find internship programs. You've got to get on the phone and talk to coaches and programs and find out "do you have any available openings?" "Do you have any positions?" "Do you need a basketball manager?" "Do you need a team manager?" Hey folks if you want to be a great basketball coach at any level of the sports ladder then you've got to pick up the phone, call around, send your resume, let people know you're interested. Get on the Internet, do research. Find out what it takes to be a great basketball coach. Find out what some of the great basketball coaches are doing. Find out what they've done to be successful. Maybe they can give you some of their success tips. Some of the greatest coaches of all times. Coach Kaye, Mike Krzyzewski, Pat Head Summit. Some of the great coaches of all times. John Thompson from Georgetown. Phenomenal coaches. NBA coaches Red Auerbach. I think everyone in America knows the tradition at the Boston Celtics under Red Auerbach. So be willing to work hard, have fun. Be willing to train your student athletes. And you have to be a great leader. Because you know what? Great basketball coaches are great leaders.
