"You know, becoming a firefighter is a mentally and physically demanding challenge. Hi. I'm Captain Joe Bruni. Have you ever wondered what it takes to become a female firefighter? First and foremost, becoming a female firefighter or any firefighter is dictated by the municipality that you're trying to go to work for. But along with that are physical and academic challenges. Dee, can you tell me some of the physical challenges to becoming a female firefighter? "When I went through the fire academy, I had to work out in the gym a lot. I had to run and I had to keep up my cardiovascular and my flexibility and endurance." So, you would say, upper body strength is key. "Upper body strength is definitely key." Dee, can you tell me some of the academic challenges to becoming a firefighter? "Well, I am a single mother, so trying to keep up academically with school, the physical challenges and keeping up with my son was extremely difficult." As you can see, becoming a female firefighter is just as challenging as becoming a male firefighter. But some of the key differences for a female firefighter is upper body strength. Getting that upper body strength in tune and keeping in shape is key to becoming a firefighter in general, but it is a little more challenging for some females. If you work at it, or even find a personal trainer to help you through the weight lifting and the cardiovascular exercises that'll be needed, you'll be well on your way to becoming a professional female firefighter.
