"Hi, my name's Natanya Nielsen. I live in Saratoga Springs, Utah. We're talking about crochet basics today, and right now we're going to learn how to gauge a project. When you are working on a project, the gauge of your pattern tells you how big or how small your pattern should be so your finished product turns out the right size. This is determined by the size of yarn you use, and the size of the hook that you use. As you can tell, using the same kind of yarn with a different sized hook, we come up with two completely different sized stitches. This is just done by the hook. If you look at your yarn before you buy it, or for your project, there's a little gauge instruction here on the corner. It tells you that with seventeen chain stitches, and twenty three rows of stitches, you should get a four by four inch, using a size eight hook. As you start a project, if you will look in your pattern books, it also has a gauge, and it gives you the guidelines for the size of hook, and the yarn, and the size that pattern and your project should come out."
