Series Summary

Learning to ride a bicycle is usually regarded as one of the major milestones of childhood, since it is one of the first steps, after learning to walk, that a child takes towards independence. Taking this view, a bicycle can easily be seen as a precursor to the ultimate vehicle of autonomy: the automobile. Yet, many people ride bicycles into late adulthood, and some cultures have built entire transportation systems around the bike. So the bicycle remains both a fun vehicle for recreation and exercise and a viable means of transportation over relatively short distances. It can be said that bicycles hold a certain excitement as simple machines that we can use to move our bodies faster than usually is possible, pumping and pushing in sync with the gears and pedals. In this free video series on bicycle ownership, repair and maintenance, a bike shop employee gives tip after tip for making the most of a good bike. Bike more comfortably after learning how to adjust and select a good bicycle seat, clean and lube the chain, overhaul the moving parts and more. Shipping a bike can be a drag. How much do you have to take apart? Do you use a box? Hear a cycle shop employee give tips on riding in the street in cities, staying safe in daily commutes, keep your pants clean, choose a sturdy lock and other good ideas for anyone who rides a bike to work. Learn ways to ride your bike more often and get more from owning a good bicycle, too.

Video Transcript

"Hi I'm Travis with Mad Dog Cycles and we are talking about womens' saddles. Womens' saddles are actually quite different than the mens' saddles. As you can tell this is the mens' on my right and the womens' on my left and the left one, the womens' one is a little bit shorter than the mens and then the sit bones are a little bit different on the womens then the guys as well so therefore that is why you for women, need to have a womens' specific saddle and it will be much more comfortable and there is all types. We have a basic comfort type and then we have a road version and even more of a cruiser type saddle as well. This is actually a womens' specific bike with this womens' saddle on it and here again it is a little bit shorter version of it a little bit wider sit bones and as you can see this is a womens' specific, it is not a mens' or unisex. The top tube on this one is a little bit shorter, a little bit shorter cranks and the angles are a little bit different to fit women, 5'10" and shorter."
