Major car tune-ups, or vehicle overhauls, are vital to the upkeep and maintenance of an automobile. A car is a complex machine made up of simple machines which have many different parts and processes that must be checked for breakage, leaks and wear. A mechanic does all of these tune-up checks when a car comes into the auto shop, though many car owners learn how to check their cars for issues themselves to fix common problems without costly mechanic visits. A little automobile knowledge goes a long way in saving money, avoiding scams and keeping cars in top shape. In this free video series on car maintenance, automotive service excellence (ASE) certified master mechanic Mark Blocker teaches viewers how to adjust the valves on a 1989 Acura Integra. Video Transcript

"Hello, I am Mark Blocker. In this training video, we are going to cover a valve adjustment on a 1989 Acura Integra that utilizes a 1.6 Double Overhead Cam engine, sixteen valve. If part of a scheduled maintenance procedure, it is usually done at same intervals as a tune up at every vehicle manufacturer. Honda and Acura recommend every sixty-thousand miles or for extreme duty, a lot of inter-city driving stop and go, forty-five thousand miles or four years. A valve adjustment is one of the more important maintenance procedures that needs to be done on the engine at the tune up intervals. If they get out of adjustment, they cause driveability problems, damage, excessive wear, and loss of performance and gas mileage. Especially if a valve is over adjusted or you have a clearance problem where a valve is not closing all the way that does not allow the sonar to build up compression and can cause major other driveability problems by the change in signals given to the computer system which controls the fuel injection. So, it is extremely important that this get done. It will make a major difference on how the engine runs and how it performs. If the valves were bad out of adjustment when you adjusted them. So, watch our next segment on safety."
