"Hi, I'm Tim Cole with Austin Reptile Service and I've been keeping reptiles amphibians for over forty years and we're here to talk to you about keeping California King Snakes. These are very popular pets. They average about three to four feet. They come in a variety of patterns and colors. They do make good pets because they're not too big and they usually have a pretty good temperament. Most of them calm down once they've been handled for a while. Some of them will develop a feeding response. If you're feeding them within their cage, they may associate your hand coming in the cage with food, so you may want to think about feeding them in a separate container to help cut down on that feeding response. They, basically, are kept like any other snake. Give them a high place, a area that they can warm up. Under tank heaters work very well for them. Room temperature for the cage could be in the upper seventies, and give them a water bowl that they can get in and out of and they should do just fine. Once again, we feed all our caged snakes, frozen rodents that have been thawed out in hot water, and they do just fine."
