"To become a veterinarian I think once again I can't emphasize enough how important it is to be a good student once again as far as math and science goes and just developing good study habits. It think it is very important too to work in the veterinary clinic and see what goes on because it gives you an idea of the various areas that one can even specialize in if you were inclined to do so. Also by seeing cases from day to day you see the routine stuff and learn the art if you will of giving or performing a physical exam and then you also learn what is going on when you are doing surgery, what kind of parameters are being monitored for the animal and more importantly I think that just talking to the veterinarian, asking questions and understanding what he is doing, what his thought processes are when he is doing various things is very important because it helps you to understand what the job really entails and although you may not understand everything that is said to you when you get to veterinary school you will remember some of the things that you were exposed to and it all begins to make sense. One of the biggest challenges I think veterinarians face is the idea that veterinarians are individuals who love animals, they are nice people and so you are going to bring your pet in and you won't be charged for the surface whereas if you go to the human hospital you know up front that you are going to pay for the service provided and if you are unable to pay and in some cases if you don't have insurance you may be refused treatment so I think that that puts the veterinarian sometimes between a rock and a hard place because they are not able to impart the importance of what needs to be done and so people choose to do the minimum in a lot of cases because unfortunately sometimes it is all that they can afford."
