"Hi my name is Pat Goodwin with Pat Goodwin Associates. What are steps in preventing gender discrimination. The steps that must be taken is a company should have in their policies and procedures manual, posted online that they were an equal opportunity employer. That means that they are open to hiring people of different genders, different ethnicities, different races and different ages. So if that is posted, then they should be in compliance with the law that would prevent them from not hiring based on gender. So if you find that you are in a position where you believe that you've been screened out based on gender, I would see if you could do some follow up, if you could ask for a follow up conversation after the interview and if you find that you have the right to ask those questions, which you do, then you want clarification. Is it the skills that you were offering that was not quite what they needed or did you truly feel like that they were discriminating against you based on gender. Many companies today have compliance that is strictly, strictly overseen by the EEOC and I would hope that you should be protected and feel protected in knowing that you're not going to be discriminated against based on gender. Again if you are moving into a field of work where there is more of one type of gender in that work versus others, such as you might go by and look at people up on electrical wires or climbing telephone poles and typically you've seen men doing that, but that is a profession that women have moved into. Then you go to a hospital and you find that most nurses you would have a preconceived idea that many women are in the nursing profession, but in the last 10 to 12, 15 years, men have found that that is a wonderful profession that they're in. They are following family patterns, I've worked with people before who have had a long history of nurses and the men have then changed careers and gone into the nursing field because they enjoy it. They can go into medical technologists, certain technologists in the MRI area. So you will find that there are lots of fields of work that both genders are moving into. So I hope that helps you to realize that there should not be any gender discrimination in the workplace today."
