" Hi! My name is Richard Rivas, co-owner of Black Jungle Terrarium Supply and today I am here on behalf of expertvillage.com to discuss the proper way to raise your dart frogs from egg through the tadpole stage. Now that we have our egg clutch and it has been properly logged, the next stage is to prepare it for development. Here at Black Jungle what we use are basically the 10 x 20 inch plastic trays that are commonly used for seed starting. We like these because they can hold anywhere from 10 to 12 clutches of eggs for the size deli lid that we use. They make observation of the eggs in developing embryos very easy and they provide a nice way to provide humidity. To prepare them for development it is relatively simple. It is just a matter of placing the egg tray into the development tray, adding water to the egg tray to moisten the eggs and then simply placing the cover over the top. In most cases, no additional care is required. In this type of tray that we use here, is not even necessary. The most important thing is that you provide an environment that is going to limit the amount of air exchange to avoid the eggs from drying out. The amount of moisture that you actually add to the eggs is also not that critical just so long that they don’t dry out and they are not covered more than 25 percent of the thickness of the egg over the top. Really there has been a lot of discussion as far as the exact volume of water that is needed but the dart frog eggs are actually pretty tough and as long as you are not completely drowning them or allowing them to completely dry out for several days at a time; the development really isn’t going to be affected. Once the water has been added and the trays are full in the development tray, then these go onto a shelf in a room where the room temperature averages about 75 degrees until they hatch. "
