How to Replace the Blades on a Portable Thickness Planer

" Hi! This is Jon on behalf of expertvillage.com. In this video clip I’ll take you through part three for changing planer blades. After removing the old blade, what I like to do is take some compressed air and blow out any debris that may be in there. The next thing that we’re going to do is we’re going to use the magnets again, and we’re going to install the new blades. And after this, we’re going to reinstall the gib, also using the magnets for this as well, and we’re going to make sure that we align the holes on the gib with holes on the new blades. After this, what we need to do is go ahead and line up our holes again, and go ahead and start putting in some of those screws. Now as you screw in the last screw, you’re going to want to make sure to leave them just a little bit loose because we still need to set the blade. The next step is to release that latch and rotate the cutter head; and to set the blade, we’re going to go ahead and use our magnets which have been designed with special groves in them so that it sets it to the right depths. So what we’re going to do is go ahead and place our magnets onto our blades, and we’re going to push it down so that the blade sits in there where it should; and when I push this down, I’m going to go ahead and tighten up my bolts, and I’m going to do the same for the other side as well. Once I’ve tightened the last of them, I’m going to go back through and double check that all of them are tight."
