on 2/16/2009 I'd like to respectfully disagree with this video. There are several published studies in respected medical journals that show that the body can not only function on a low carbohydrate diet, but actually thrive. Limiting carbohydrates can significantly improve metabolic syndrome, stabilize blood glucose levels, improve lipid profiles, reduce blood pressure levels, and create a protein sparing environment within the body. I'd recommend anyone who is interested in looking into this further do some research on pubmed, or google clinical studies of a low carbohydrate diet.

"What happens to our metabolism without proper amounts and also appropriate kinds of carbohydrates? What happens to our bodies without that? I like to think of it as an example of how gas, on how a car runs on gas. So if you give your car a premium gas then it tends to run much longer it tends to have less break downs and the life of the car tends to be longer. It's kind of the same with carbohydrates in the human body. If you supply your body with appropriate carbohydrates and the right amount, then your bodies can tend to go longer with the right amount of energy. And its like premium gas for your body. If we don't have the right amount of carbohydrates, then our bodies begin to wear down and it can even start to break down proteins which is in our muscles. It starts to break down on that muscle so that we can have energy and we don't want our muscles broken down. We're always trying to keep our muscles and also helping carbohydrates protect us against cancers, heart disease, diabetes, some intestinal complications and aging. So as you can see carbohydrates are so important for our metabolism especially in keeping a healthy body."
