Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Lift up the collar of your shirt. Put the tie around the back of your neck so that the wide end hangs down on the side of your dominant hand, a little more than twice as low as the thin end.

  2. Step 2

Wrap the wide end once around the thin end a few inches below your neck, pulling the wide end toward the side of your dominant hand.

  3. Step 3

Slip the wide end through the front of the V shape made by the knot, pulling it out toward the side of your dominant hand.

  4. Step 4

Wrap the wide end around the front of the knot.

  5. Step 5

Slip the wide end through the back of the V shape made by the knot.

  6. Step 6

Tuck the wide end into the front loop of the knot.

  7. Step 7

Pull down gently on the wide and thin ends from below the knot until the knot is tight.

  8. Step 8

Grasp the thin end with your nondominant hand, and slide the knot up to your neck with your dominant hand.

  9. Step 9

If the thin end hangs lower than the wide end, untie the tie and begin again with the wide end hanging lower than it did the first time.

  10. Step 10

If the wide end hangs too low, untie the tie and begin again with the wide end hanging higher than it did the first time.

  11. Step 11

Flip down your collar once the tie looks the way you want it to.

on 12/16/2005 I find that the knot looks and holds better if you go around the small end 1 full time and pull the big end through backward, then go around again in the opposite direction before pulling it through to complete the knot. A tie with a wool lining on the inside will also make a stiffer, more professional knot and prevent your tie from getting wrinkled.
