How to perform a clean and press

Video Preview

Introduction

In my humble opinion, this exercise is the all-encompassing workout. If I'm in a hurry and don't have an hour to burn in the gym, or I'm feeling I need a full body beating, this is the exercise I do.

Tips & Warnings:

  • Always keep your back tight and straight during this lift.
  • When doing clean and press or clean and jerks usually keep you reps low.
  • This is one of my favorite exercises, no spotter, and all over workout.
  • If your not used to this lift, do it with a light weight first.
Step1
Start with the bar an inch in front of your shins already loaded with a weight your comfortable with doing. It should be around 60% of your ORM to start this. If you don't know what your ORM is for this exercise do it with your military press weight at first.
Step2
Get your feet about shoulder width apart, and bend in proper squat position and grip the bar. Your grip on the bar should be way outside your stance.
Step3
Now, tighten your back much the same way you would for a deadlift, look up at your spot, and pull up to complete for a deadlift. You should be standing with the weight in your hands.
Step4
Here is the tricky move. This step is called the jerk. It's called this because of the motion you do to get the bar in the top form of the jerk. Moving explosively, bend your knees just a bit and push yourself back straight hard and fast. At the top of this movement, when the weight is it's lightest, pull up hard and fast. When the bar is at the top of this movement, sling your elbows under the bar and let the bar roll\fall across your chest just under your collar bone.
Step5
Now, for the press part. Bend your knees again, now this time at the crescendo of the movement, push the bar up like a standing military press. Lock your elbows at the top of the press. I don't recommend you lock your knees with any part of the exercise.
