Hi there! I'm Fran Friedman from Morning Star Animal Sanctuary and I am here to talk to you about times when it is not appropriate to travel with your ferret. Everybody loves to take their ferrets, they are lots of fun to share with friends and family. Sometimes the environment is not safe; someone might have animals that don't get along with ferrets and you don't want to put them at risk or you are just taking a holiday from everything and you are flying down South to get some sunshine and you don't want to bring your ferrets with you. The best thing to do is to have a pet sitter that the ferrets know to come in and watch your ferrets. What we do is we had our pet sitter come in and actually come and play and visit with the ferrets to get to know them. They definitely know the difference between their owner and a new person and they act different so it is good for them to form a sort of bond before you go away; that is essential. Sometimes it may cost you a little bit of money to have them come for an hour before hand and have a relationship but that is also good time for them to ask any questions they may have about care of ferrets. Not all pet sitters are expert in ferrets and some of them it would be the first time they have taken care of an animal like this. Also if you can't take your ferret because you need a break, the best thing is that you leave a perhaps a T-shirt of yours or pair of pants that aren't washed, pair of socks or something and leave it in the cage so that your ferret can smell that you are kind of still around yet not but it can happen that while you are away, your ferret does get stressed and maybe stops eating. So it is very important that you have a number where your sitter can get in touch with you and also of the vet so the ferret could be brought to the vet if needed while you are away.
