How to Pass Part Five of the Canine Good Citizen Test: Walking Calmly Through Crowded Areas
Introduction
Here are tips and a video to help your dog pass part five of The Canine Good Citizen test. Dogs that pass the test receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club (AKC).
The following are steps to help you pass Part Five.
Check the Resources below for more information on leash walking.
Any dog that eliminates during testing must be marked failed. The only exception to this rule is that elimination is allowable in test Item 10, but only when test Item 10 is held outdoors.
Any dog that growls, snaps, bites, attacks or attempts to attack a person or another dog is not a good citizen and must be dismissed from the test.
Step1
In Part Five of the Canine Good Citizen test your dog must demonstrate that he can walk through a crowded area. The test shows that your dog can be controlled around people.
Step2
Start by practicing with a group of friends. Have your dog walk through the group.
Step3
If your dog likes to jump or become unruly around strangers, practice walking your dog in areas with a lot of people. I start by walking my dog in areas where there are not a lot of people. Once my dog is walking well on a leash, I go someplace that has people, like a shopping area.
Step4
Once you can walk your dog in areas where there are a lot of people, you are ready for this part of the test.
