I am Dr. Jeffrey Levy, house call vet, NYC and this is left handedness in cats. I'm a leftie and I'm proud of it. So have you ever wondered whether your cat is a leftie or a rightie? Recent studies in Italy have proven the existence of let and right sided tail wagging. So why can't we have left and right handed kitties? When it comes to right and left handedness in cats, no particular distinction has been noted in terms of everyday behavior. However, when it comes to complex tasks such as retrieving tuna fish from a jar, it appears that cats do indeed profess some left or right handedness. In certain studies in Europe, it was demonstrated in complex tasks female kitties tend to be right handed where the lefties were the males. In other studies in other countries, however, there has been a more even distribution of this left and right handedness when it comes to complex tasks. This would be an interesting finding in view of the fact that we human beings tend to be almost 90% right handed. So if you've ever wondered whether your cat is a leftie or rightie, why don't you do some observation and try to find out.
