List of Good and Inexpensive Red Wines

Save

When one thinks of wine, expensive is usually equated with good taste. However if you do not have the big bucks to spend on a bottle of quality red wine, you are not without options. There are many brands that offer wonderful tasting varieties of red wine for under 10 bucks.

The Little Penguin

  • The Little Penguin is a brand of Southeastern Australian wine that can be purchased at most supermarkets at a cost of $6 or $7 for a .75 liter bottle. In terms of red varieties, the Little Penguin offers Shiraz, merlot, cabernet sauvignon and mixtures like cabernet merlot and Shiraz cabernet. The Little Penguin is also a proud producer of pinot noir, as this varietal has become one of the most popular in the world. Fruit forward and generally sweeter is a good description of the Little Penguin's red varietals.

Yellow Tail

  • Yellow Tail is another Australian wine brand that has become hugely popular worldwide. It began as a small family winery and now has expanded into a full selection of white, red and sparkling wines. Yellow Tail's varietals of reds include pinot noir, merlot, Shiraz, Shiraz grenache, Shiraz cabernet, cabernet merlot and cabernet sauvignon. Raspberries, plums and other dark berry fruits are the base of these inexpensive yet good reds. Yellow Tail is also retailed for around $6 or $7 and found in a majority of grocery stores.

Little Black Dress

  • Little Black Dress is a wine brand whose pinot noir was noted by the New York Post as being a surprise hit for under $10, with a clove and dried plum nose and a good balance of acidity and tannins. In addition to the pinot noir, Little Black Dress also has red varietals such as merlot and cabernet. The name, Little Black Dress, comes from the idea that this brand of wine--like the always appropriate little black dress--is reliable, trustworthy and perfect for any occasion. They feature light-bodied, floral pinot noir, smooth, rich cabernet and the toasty oak of merlot.
