Theme Ideas for a Date Party

Whether you are throwing a party with your fraternity or sorority, or simply planning a couples' date party, use themes that offer different takes on romance. Your theme might offer guests a chance to dress up in order to break the ice on a first date, or provide activities that will get each person talking and mingling. Choose themes that you can execute easily in the party space and that will be achievable by guests.

Famous Couples

  • For a date party that has flexibility in costumes and allows creativity, use a Famous Couples theme. Each pair must come as a famous couple, which can be interpreted as a human couple or two things that are related. Your guests might dress as Sonny and Cher, for example, or they can dress as two peas in a pod, a ball and chain, or a hammer and a nail. To keep the focus on the costumes, use simple decorations like oversized prints of famous couples and hold a contest with awards including "most creative" and "closest resemblance."

Fan Fair

  • During a fan fair date party, ask each person and their date to come dressed as fans. Guests can come as sports fans, or they can dress as fans of comic books, superheroes, anime or cult classic movies, or even as band groupies. This type of theme can be executed easily with a simple hair ribbon and face paint in school colors, which makes it practical for college students who do not have much money to spend on costumes. Decorate the house in fan paraphernalia like flag garlands, banners, posters and megaphones.

Get Lucky

  • On St. Patrick's Day, hold a Get Lucky party to introduce your friends to potential dates. Ask each person in your sorority, fraternity or circle of friends to invite two dates of the same sex and three dates of the opposite sex to make even numbers. Make sure that each guest is single to increase the chances of "getting lucky" and meeting someone interesting. Decorate the house with leprechauns, shamrocks and pots of gold.

Grab a Date

  • For a fun take on a date party, gather your friends into one room and inform them that they have one hour to grab a date for the party. Guests must set out on foot, without using cell phones, and convince a person they find on campus, on the street or anywhere in walking distance to come back with them to the party as their date. This ensures that you will have a mix of people who do not know each other well, and creates a fun activity to start off the evening.
