Make Believe Games for Kids

Many little girls enjoy playing fairy make-believe games.

One of the best things about childhood is being able to make up your own games and play in a fantasy world. Children have the ability to see things that aren’t really there and create transformed environments with their creativity. If your children enjoy these types of activities, there are many different types of make-believe games you can teach them.

  1. Fairy Tale Games

    • Most little girls love fairy tales and think of themselves as princesses. Tap into this line of creativity by suggesting fairy tale games. According to the Disney Family Fun website, fairy parties are popular events that typically involve dressing up like fairy princesses, complete with tulle and satin outfits. Give the girls glitter and tell them it’s fairy dust. Staple white twinkle lights and let them make flowers out of tissue paper. Send them outside to hunt for flowers that might have special magical powers.

    Water Games

    • Swimming pools and lakes can be great environments for make-believe games as well. These games should be supervised by adults and only played by children who know how to swim. Tell your children to pretend they are mermaids, and show them how to swim with crossed ankles. If you are at a lake or beach, suggest they hunt for “pearls” and let them try to find shells and clams. Blow up several large floats and tell them there are alligators or sharks in the water, and they must cross the pool without falling into the water. Little boys can play make-believe pirate games with inflatable boats. Throw some waterproof items to the bottom of the pool and tell them to dive for their treasure.

    Dress-Up Games

    • Dressing up in costumes and outfits is fun for most little girls. Provide princess dresses, complete with tiaras, and watch them get into character at a make-believe tea party. Some children want to dress up as adults instead. Let them put on your old formal dresses, shoes, hats, makeup, gloves and costume jewelry, and give them large purses to carry around. Give little girls and boys animal costumes, and let them act out how the particular animals act.

    War/Action Games

    • Little boys often come with war or action games. Some of these games are based on recent pop culture movies, while others stick to old-school staple movies, such as "Star Wars." Many boys enjoy playing Cops and Robbers or Cowboys and Indians. They choose the “bad guy” amongst themselves, bikes become horses or motorcycles, and the purpose of the game is to track down or hunt the enemy. If you do not want your boys playing with fake, plastic guns or swords, suggest they play some type of action game without weapons. An example is playing astronaut and aliens, or playing a superhero with some type of superhero power.
