Tips and Tricks for a PSP Portable

The Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) is a hand-held multimedia entertainment center. Capable of playing games, the PSP can also play music, videos and access the Internet. Keeping in mind a few essential tips and tricks will help you get the most out of your PSP and explore the console's many features with ease.

  1. UMD Games

    • Games for the PSP are widely available for purchase in Universal Media Disc (UMD) format. Although UMD games have a plastic housing around the disc itself, it is crucial to store your UMD either in its game packaging or in a protective housing, sold separately, to avoid getting dust and scratches on the disc.

    Memory Stick Duo

    • If you want to save your game's progress as well as store media, such as downloaded games, videos, and music, to your PSP, you need to have a Memory Stick Duo with sufficient free space inserted into the dedicated port at the bottom left of the console. With a PSP to PC USB cable, you can also store and transfer files to and from your personal computer.

    LCD Display

    • One of the PSP's standout features is its large, wide LCD display screen. Protecting this screen from scratches is key to enjoying your PSP. Purchasing a protective carrying case for your PSP will prolong the life of the display screen, but it is a good idea to use a PSP screen protector--available wherever PSP products are sold--to cover the display screen's surface. This thin protector can be removed and reapplied, and will keep your display clean and scratch-free.

    WLAN Switch

    • If you're having trouble connecting to a wireless Internet access point, make sure that the small switch, labeled "WLAN," is in the "On" position. This switch is located on the top left of the PSP console.

    Transferring Media

    • Games, music and video are available for wireless download via the PlayStation network, yet they can also be purchased and downloaded onto your personal computer. With the PSP's USB cable, you can transfer these files to your PSP with ease. A free online program, such as "Media Go," can streamline the process of converting media files and transferring them to your PSP.
