Costume Ideas for 2-4 People

Save

Create costumes ideal for groups of two to four people that are inspired by television shows such as The Flintstones, I Love Lucy and Saturday Night Live. Or create a costume inspired by an interested shared among the group -- in this case, hunting. These costume ideas are appropriate for all genders and ages. Some of the costumes require trips to a store and others can easily put together with items you may have in your home.

Yabba Dabba Doo Time

The Flintstones, which premiered in 1960, was the longest-running, prime time animated situation comedy. After ending this run in 1966, the "modern day stone age family" entertained children Saturday mornings from 1967 to 1970, according to The Museum of Broadcast Communications. Based on the Honeymooners, the Flintstones features Fred and Wilma Flintstone, their daughter, Pebbles, along with neighbors Barney and Betty Rubble and their club-wielding son, Bamm Bamm.

Red-headed Wilma wears a white dress with a rock necklace, and her brunette friend Betty wears a blue strapless dress with a rock pendant. Cut rough V shapes around the hems to create the jagged hemline worn by the two friends. Fred and Barney's sacklike furs can be created with scissors and material, black for Barney and orange with black spots for Fred. Cut out jagged holes for the neck and arms, and do a zigzag cut at the bottoms of their tunics like on the women's. In the Flintstones, Pebbles and Bamm Bamm grew from babies to young children. In the 70s The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show, they appeared as teens. So this costume idea can easily accommodate all ages.

We Love Lucy

While Ricky and Lucy Ricardo are two of the most beloved and recognized television characters of all time, the television show's foursome would not be complete without their landlords and best friends, Fred and Ethel Mertz. A single trip to a vintage store can provide the clothing you need to channel your favorite [I Love Lucy](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0043208/?ref=fn_al_tt1) character.

Lucy and Ethel typically wore 1950's-style dresses: Think tight bodice, prim collars and A-line skirts with hemlines just below the knees. Add pumps, perhaps a string of pearls, and hats, the latter especially if your dressing as Lucy. To dress like Ricky or Fred, choose 1950s slacks, wingtip shoes, button-up shirts, jackets and ties -- make that a checkered shirt and bow tie for Fred. Search a thrift or vintage clothing store, but first ask family and friends if they have anything for you in their attics. Complete your costumes with wigs -- carrot-red for Lucy, wavy and black for Ricky, gray for Ethyl and nearly bald for Fred.

Tip

    • Watch a couple episodes of I Love Lucy and practice some of the signature expressions used by your character. Learn to swear in Cuban.
    • Add to the fun by putting together outlandish costumes based on favorite episodes, such as Lucy Stomping Grapes. Not all characters need to be from the same episode.

A Hunting We Will Go

Have one person in your group dress up as a hunter. He or she should wear camouflage clothing with a bright orange vest and cap. Others in the group might dress up as game, such as turkey, duck or deer. To create a deer costume, wear brown pants, a tan or brown sweater, an antler headband, and Halloween face makeup to finish the look.

Warning

  • Costumed hunters -- leave all weapons, real or fake, at home.

It's Saturday Night!

Saturday Night Live has been filling living rooms with hundreds of hilarious, memorable since 1975 -- Opera Man and Target Lady to name a couple. For Opera Man, wear a black tuxedo, red-lined cape, and wig of long brown hair. Creating a Target Lady costume is inexpensive and simple, requiring only a trip to a thrift store. Dress in an ugly button-up blouse, ill-fitting pleated pants and a red vest. To gather your own inspiration and ideas, review the list of SNL characters or watch clips of your favorite SNL episodes.
