MIS stands for management information systems. This may refer to a specific system of computers and programming within a business or the general field of information management. The MIS field combines computer programming, analysis and business skills to provide businesses with computer solutions to improve performance or streamline their workflows.
MIS vs. IT
Information technology, or IT, commonly refers to the computer technology field. IT professionals often work with businesses to solve computer issues and enhance or upgrade software. MIS professionals provide similar services, but their focus is on the business side of computer information management, rather than strictly on the software and hardware. MIS workers must have an understanding of how businesses operate and create computer solutions based on business needs.
To work in the MIS field, you need skills in computer programming, business management and interpersonal relations. In-depth programming skills are less necessary than the ability to modify existing programs for specific uses and train company members how to use those systems effectively. MIS professionals need the ability to see the large picture of how a business operates, what its goals are and how it can grow efficiently through better computer software and training.
Changes to MIS
As mobile technology grows, MIS workers need to have the skills to incorporate newer technological platforms into management workflows as necessary. Mobile application development skills as well as traditional computer programming skill are becoming a part of this field. Management systems for company information include both the internal and external information, such as company work flow and the client-facing website and other electronic media, so an understanding of the consumer's electronic information needs and desires falls under MIS planning and execution.
Wages and Employment
MIS professionals receive high compensation for their work compared to average pay for all jobs across the United States. At the time of publication, the most recent Bureau of Labor Statistics report listed an annual mean salary of $133,450 for computer systems design and related services, which covers the MIS field. California and New York offer the highest employment opportunities and mean salaries of more than $141,000 annually. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts "Faster than average" growth and excellent opportunities for employment in MIS and related fields.
