Long Hairstyles of the Eighties
The 1980s was a time of individual and eccentric fashion choices. There were several popular hairstyles for those with long hair, whether male or female. A person's choice of hairstyle in the '80s was often dictated by the music they liked, or with which group they associated themselves. Does this Spark an idea?

Big Hair
-
Women and teenage girls with big, crimped or permed hair is an iconic stereotype of an '80s fashion disaster; many people look back at their hair in the 1980s and cringe. Big hair was often layered or feathered, to get more volume at the top, then curled, permed, crimped or back-combed to make it big. Girls used lots of hairspray, gel or mousse to keep their hair in place.
New Wave Hairstyles
-
Fans of new wave bands, such as Adam and the Ants and Joy Division, often styled their hair according to the new wave fashion. New wave hairstyles could be done on long hair, as well as short. The new wave hairstyle was characterized by being dead straight, with one side longer than the other and one or both sides cut in points or an A-line style.

Side Ponytails
-
Side ponytails were popularized in the 1980s by pop stars and by the "valley girl" trend. Girls with a side ponytail tightly pulled all their hair back and fixed it high on one side of the head. Some people crimped the hair to add extra body to the side ponytail, but others wore their hair straight. It was common for a side ponytail to be fixed in place with a "scrunchy" hair tie.
Men's Long Hair
-
Following the success of glam metal bands, such as Motley Crue and Poison, many long-haired boys opted for hairstyles similar to those of the members of these bands. The hairstyles of glam metal bands were so iconic that the genre was often referred to as "hair metal." Glam metal hair was cut layered and jagged, then back-combed and fixed with hairspray in a big, messy style. One of the most popular wearers of this hairstyle was Nikki Sixx from Motley Crue.
