DIY Medieval Crafts for Wedding Invitations

Knights are common symbols of medieval Europe.

Your crafted wedding invitations can reflect medieval European flair without breaking your budget. Although you can seal wedding invitation envelopes with wax, you may do better to place invitations inside of a second envelope. Wax can melt if exposed to hot climates, which may damage your invitations. Keep a thesaurus handy as you write out your invitations.

  1. Paper for Medieval Invitations

    • Use heavy parchment paper for your invitations. You can also select other paper for your invitation and use methods to "age" the paper. Darken the paper by coating it in lemon juice and allowing it to dry, or apply flame to the edges of the paper. (Wet the inner edges of the paper so it only burns to that point.) Send your invitations as scrolls, wrapping the rolled invitations with ribbon or another material.

    Invitation Wording

    • Selecting language appropriate to the medieval era is important for your wedding invitations. You may address the bride and groom as "Lady" and "Lord," respectively, and use words such as "thou" and "thy." When including the year in an invitation, you may choose to list it as "In the year of our Lord." Check the invitation to see that you have included a date, time and location for the wedding ceremony and reception. Address the outer envelope to the names of all invitees. If children are also invited to the wedding, you may address an invitation to, "Lord and Lady Mike Smith and Family" in place of "Mr. and Mrs. Mike Smith and Family."

    Invitation Design

    • Search for clip art and borders that reflect a medieval theme to use on your invitations. You may also use calligraphy pens to write out each of your invitations. Otherwise, word processor programs also feature calligraphy and similar font styles. If you choose to write out your invitations, do the first and then scan it. Use the scanned invitation to print out the rest of your invitations. If you include a map to the wedding ceremony or reception with your invitation, draw it out on aged paper.

Other Items Included With an Invitation

    • You may include other handouts with your wedding invitation, such as a reply card or other information about the wedding venue. When possible, use the same paper style you used for your wedding invitation. You may wish to include all of your guests' names on the reply card to avoid confusion about who may or may not be invited. You may label the top of the reply card with, "The favor of thy reply is requested by June 20, in this year of our Lord." Leave blank spaces and then two options, such as "accepts with merriment" or "declines with regret."
