Advice on Travel Insurance
Illness, delays, cancellations or injuries can ruin a trip. Running into trouble locating service providers or professionals to aid you during these situations can increase your disappointment. Travel insurance policies are designed to address specific issues and situations that travelers might encounter and provide quick, easy solutions. Some of the more popular types of insurance include rental car, interruption/cancellation, health and accidental death.
-
Travel Interruption/Cancellation Coverage
-
Inclement weather can result in travel delays, interruptions or cancellations. One common type of trip insurance is travel interruption/cancellation coverage. If your travel plans are interrupted or canceled, this policy provides monetary refunds as well as assistance with alternate plans. For example, if a delayed air flight causes you to miss boarding a cruise, travel interruption coverage can provide refunds for the cost of the cruise and fees to change existing airline tickets. Travel interruption/cancellation policies cover a wide variety of options and situations; they are available through most travel agents. Some policies can be expensive, so consider the cost carefully before purchasing.
Health/Medical Coverage
-
Some medical policies provide a link to your regular health care provider while traveling. Most health and medical insurance plans limit their coverage areas, typically within the insured's home country. Buying travel health and medical coverage that's specific to your destination can provide assistance with unexpected health issues while out of the country. Common health issues travelers face include motion sickness, food poisoning, allergic reactions, cold s and flu and injuries. Research policies carefully to determine coverage area, coverage period, deductibles, limitations and types of illnesses covered.

Rental Car Insurance
-
Some countries, such as Italy, have mandantory rental car insurance laws. While some automobile policies include rental car coverage, it's not automatic. Supplemental collision, damage, liability and theft policies attached to rental car contracts can be costly. Before renting a vehicle, check your own automobile policy for rental car coverages and limitations. Your credit card company might provide some rental car coverage, depending on the issuer and situation. Check with your credit card company, however, for complete details before relying on this coverage. If you are renting a car in another country, rental car insurance might be mandatory.
Accidental Death and Dismemberment
-
Some credit card issuers provide accidental death and dismemberment for cardholders. Accidental death and dismemberment travel insurance policies provide compensation for the loss of a limb, sight or loss or life while on a trip. While some types of loss, such as accidental death during a commercial flight, may be covered by policies built into the ticket price, many others are not. You can buy accidental death and dismemberment policies for a specific, short time frame and provide supplemental coverage for other policies.
