Help With Expenses for a Disabled Vet
All veterans make a sacrifice to serve their country. Those who return from active duty with disabilities have made an even greater sacrifice. For these veterans, help is available to pay for necessary expenses. While the Veterans Administration provides certain services, many private, nonprofit organizations raise money to aid these wounded warriors and their families.
-
Coalition to Salute America's Heroes
-
This nonprofit organization offers financial help to disabled veterans of Operation Iraqi Freedom or Operation Enduring Freedom. Eligible veterans must have a 30 percent or larger military disability rating. The Wounded Hero Emergency Financial Relief fund provides help with urgent needs such as rent or mortgage payments, food, utility bills and automobile payments. The Road to Recovery Conference pays all expenses for disabled veterans, family and caregivers to attend this event, which features information on benefits, employment and other opportunities.
Disabled Veterans National Coalition
-
This organization provides financial assistance to eligible disabled veterans. Direct assistance may be granted to those in need, and grants are also available for veterans who "fall through the cracks" of traditional disabled veterans services. Among these are female veterans, the homeless, and those suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or brain injuries. Financial assistance includes payments for housing, utilities, travel to permanent lodging, or items needed to improve veterans' lives.

Operation First Response
-
Through its Wounded Warrior Family Financial Assistance Program, Operation First Response offers funds for needs of disabled veterans including rent and car payments, utilities, clothing, food, and travel to medical facilities. The Last Mission program provides funding for veterans suffering from PTSD and experiencing serious financial problems. Documentation from the Veterans Administration or certified physicians confirming the PTSD is required, along with bills that may not be paid due to the veteran's situation.
The American Legion
-
Through its Heroes to Hometown program, the American Legion provides funds to injured veterans including assistance with housing, vehicle and home adaptation for disabilities, family support, entertainment options and help with government claims and financial planning. Disabled veterans also receive a welcome-home celebration from the American Legion. Temporary general financial help, childcare, educational assistance and counseling is also available.
