How to Replace a Sony Wega Projection Lamp

Save

Some Sony Grand Wega television sets use a set of three liquid crystal display panels, a lamp and a screen. They are actually projection systems that are contained in a single box. Like any projector that uses a lamp, the Sony Wega television's lamp eventually burns out, but Sony builds the television so that you can replace it.

Obtain New Lamp

  • Sony Wega television lamps are typically specific to a given television model. Since they aren't usually in stock at your corner hardware store, you'll have to order them from Sony or from a store or website that sells projection lamps. Given that you won't be able to use your television set at all if the lamp fails, it's a good idea to keep a spare one on hand. If you don't do this, order a new one at the first instant that your Sony Wega television's Lamp indicator begins to flash.

Remove Old Lamp

  • Before removing the lamp, turn the television set off and wait a couple of minutes for its cooling fan to stop blowing. Once the fan stops, unplug the TV from the wall and wait at least 30 minutes for it to finish cooling down. At that point, loosen the screws on the back of the TV where the front panel wraps around and remove the front panel. After removing the panel, you will see the lamp assembly cover near the right side of the television's front face. Use a coin or flathead screwdriver to remove the cover, and then use a screwdriver to remove the two screws that hold the lamp in. Slide the lamp out of the TV. Some Sony Wega televisions may not have a separate lamp cover or may require only one screw to secure the lamp.

Install New Lamp

  • The first step in installing a new lamp is to remove it from its packaging while being careful not to unnecessarily shake it and avoiding any glass parts. If you touch glass on the lamp, you could ruin it. Once you have unboxed it, place it into the channel in the Wega TV that was occupied by the previous lamp and secure it by replacing the two screws. Replace the lamp cover and the front cover and tighten the screws on the rear panel that hold it in place. You can now plug the TV set back into the wall.

Lamp Replacement Benefits

  • Beyond the obvious benefit that replacing the lamp will keep your Sony Wega television set working, lamp replacements have two other key benefits. As lamps age, they gradually lose brightness and give you a dim picture. Replacing your lamp can restore your TV's picture to like-new condition. Replacing your lamp when your TV recommends also should prevent it from catastrophically failing and exploding inside your television.
