Birthday parties bring out the kid in all of us. When it comes to fifth grade girls, however, they want to act a little more grown up. These girls are tweens who enjoy party games with slightly older themes and more challenging goals. To select games that will engage the girls, focus on their likes and interests. Does this Spark an idea?

For the Dancing Queens

Girls who like dancing will enjoy a party game of Lights Out Discotheque. This is really a game of statues in the dark set to music, but the girls will think it is far more sophisticated than regular statues. Have the girls stand in the center of a room with lots of dance floor space. Make sure there's nothing they'll bump into in the dark. Tell them they must be frozen when the music is not playing. Start the music, kill the lights and have the girls dance their hearts out. After 10 to 20 seconds, stop the music and turn on the lights at the same time. Whoever is caught still dancing must stop playing the game. Continue the drill until you have a winner. Give a CD or an iTunes gift card as a prize.
For the Fashion Queens

Challenge fifth-grade girls to become fashion designers using only aluminum foil and rubber bands. Divide the girls into teams of three and have them come up with complete outfits. Girls will giggle as they create shirts, skirts, pants, jewelry, bags, glasses and hats. After each team finishes, hold a fashion show with music and spotlights, which can be flashlights as long as they're not shined in the girls' eyes. The team with the best design wins a prize, such as t-shirts or dollar store sunglasses and jewelry.

For Night Owls

Here's a slumber party game you can play once the sun goes down. Hand out flashlights to the girls and instruct them to go outside. Once out there, they must hunt for candy. This is similar to an outdoor egg hunt. Make sure you hide the candy earlier in the evening, and keep the candy in your yard for safety. Avoid using dangerous hiding places, such as sheds or anything near a pool. The girls should hunt in teams for safety. The team with the most candy wins. A perfect prize for this is a giant chocolate bar.
For Gossip Girls
-
Girls love to gab about their likes, dislikes and funniest moments. Test how well your party girls know each other with a girlfriend quiz. Hand out printed quizzes with at least ten questions such as, "What's your favorite color?" and "What's your most embarrassing moment?" Make up your own quizzes or print free quizzes from online sites such as Disney's Family Fun (familyfun.go.com). Hand out the quizzes, then collect them and ask the girls as a group if they know the answers to various questions. For example, "Who has a dog that likes to eat peanut butter?" or "Who lost her swim suit bottoms at camp one summer?" The girl who gets the most answers right wins a prize, such as a cute notebook and matching pen.
