A mass communication student may have several career choices after graduation.

While some majors limit the career choices of graduates, a mass communication major does the opposite. Because communication is such an important part of so many different aspects of people's lives, a need for those who are able to create and deliver messages to the masses will seemingly always exist.

  1. Journalism Careers

    • Mass communication majors are required to know how to write a news story, edit for content and grammar and provide organizational structure to stories. Some of the types of positions in journalism that might be open to you include reporter, technical writer, magazine editor, columnist, news analyst, proofreader, biographer, assignment editor and photojournalist.

    Government Careers

    • A mass communication major learns about the importance of appropriately sharing ideas, working together with a group and conveying thoughts clearly when speaking in public. These are all skills that are beneficial to those who want to work in government positions. Some of the positions for which a mass communication major might be eligible include press secretary, lobbyist, media specialist, politician, mediator and administrative assistant.

    Marketing and Advertising

    • Mass communication majors are taught methods to understand how to clearly communicate ideas to others through words, images and sounds. These skills help those in marketing and advertising careers reach those people they are trying to touch. Some of the types of positions within marketing and advertising include designers, publicity directors, promotions representatives, information specialists and account managers.

    Broadcast Careers

    • Many mass communication majors specialize in learning how to manipulate audio and video with their voices and with technology. There are many broadcast careers available to those who study mass communication. Some of these careers include program directors, announcers, disc jockeys, station managers, producers, directors, sound mixers and film editors.
