Nothing says summer like a country fair, and the country crafts we see there give us a feeling of warm weather, three-legged races and Mom's apple pie. Craft some country projects of your own and get that summertime feeling all year round.
Apples epitomize living in the country. Make an apple doll with a real apple that you have peeled and cored. With a peeler, carve facial features on one side. Add subtle facial color with markers. Put a cork in the top of a 16 oz. bottle and cut the bottom off for the body. Wrap the bottle in gingham fabric and secure it with glue around the top of the bottle. Push the cored apple down onto the cork and when the apple dries and shrinks, your doll will be complete.
In the fall, take a trip to an apple farm where you can pick your own apples. Make a bag to take along with you by stamping red and green apple images on a plain canvas bag. Use rubber stamps or cut an apple in half and use the inside for the stamp. It's the perfect way to take your apple bounty home.
Make some barnyard friends out of clay pots. Create a chicken by painting a terra cotta pot and a foam ball both yellow. Turn the pot upside-down and glue the ball on the top. Glue yellow or orange feathers on the sides of the body and poke some more feathers into the head. Add wiggly eyes on the ball and an orange diamond-shaped piece of paper, folded in half, for a beak.
Make a country pig with a pot that you have painted pink. Wrap a pink chenille stem around your finger and glue to the back for a curly tail. Glue a circle of pink felt on the front and draw two black vertical lines on it with a marker for a snout. Cut two ears out of pink felt and attach to the inside front of the pot. Add two wiggly eyes to the front and your pig is ready for fun.
