What Are the Three Major Types of Trumpets?
The trumpet is a brass wind instrument, composed of a single brass tube modulated by finger valves and terminating in a flared bell. Sounding of trumpets is a function of the shape of the lips on the mouthpiece, the air pressure and the operation of the valves. Of all the brass instruments, the trumpet has the highest musical register. There are many sub-categories of trumpets, but in contemporary music three varieties predominate.

The B-Flat Trumpet
-
The B-flat trumpet is the most common across today's musical genres. It has three valves and a key range from F sharp to below middle C, which gives the B-flat the versatility for use in music ranging from country to jazz to classical.
The C Trumpet
-
The C trumpet is the instrument of choice in large orchestral settings. A three-valver, slightly smaller than the B-flat, it produces a brilliant sound and plays well alongside B-flats. Young trumpeters usually are started on a B-flat and progress to a C trumpet.

The Piccolo Trumpet
-
With just half the tubing length of a B-flat trumpet, the Piccolo trumpet is the smallest variety of trumpet. Piccolo's have four valves and are played typically in the keys of A and B-flat. When played in the upper registers, they produce a piercing, bright sound.
