Things You'll Need:

    Creating a Blank Button

  1. Step 1

Start Paint Shop Pro. Select New from the File menu.

  2. Step 2

In the New Image dialog box, select the following options: Width = 100 pixels, Height = 40 pixels, Resolution = 72 pixels per inch, Background Color = White, Image Type = 16.7 million colors. A blank button box appears.

  3. Step 3

Click on the Fill tool. The Fill tool resembles a tilted bucket with paint dripping from it.

  4. Step 4

Select the button color from the palette on the right. Click on the box to change the color; click OK.

  5. Step 5

Select Solid Color for the Fill style in the Tools Control box and click on the button box. The box will fill with the selected color.

  6. Step 6

Click on the Image menu and choose Effects, then choose Buttonize.

  7. Step 7

Choose the following options: Height = 8, Width = 8, Opacity = 50, Transparent Edge selected. You will see a preview of the button.

  8. Step 8

Change the height or width of the buttonized area by moving the controls or typing a number. Change the darkness and depth of the button by increasing or decreasing the opacity.

  9. Step 9

Select Save from the File menu to save the button. Save the button as a GIF file.

  10. Adding Text to the Button

  11. Step 1

Select the text color from the palette on the right. Click OK.

  12. Step 2

Click on the Text tool from the toolbar on the left. Click on the approximate center of the button to place the text.

  13. Step 3

In the Add Text box, choose the font and font size (try 14). Select Anti-Alias and Center alignment.

  14. Step 4

Type HOME (or whatever you want) into the text box and click OK.

  15. Step 5

Move the text around the button by selecting and dragging it. Remove the text by moving it off of the button completely.

  16. Step 6

Select Save As from the File menu and save the button under a new name.

Tips & Warnings
  • By using Save As, you retain the original blank button to use again with other text or pictures.
  • Use a regular, medium font for easy readability.
  • Make sure the font color contrasts with the button color. Use dark (preferably black) fonts for lighter buttons and lighter fonts for darker buttons.
