How to Extract Dye From Leaves and Grass

  • Cookie Sheets
  • Stockpots
  • Strainers
  • Cookie sheets

  1. Step 1

    Gather your grasses and leaves before the first frost.

  2. Step 2

    Bundle the grasses up with string or wire and hang the bundles to dry.

  3. Step 3

    Cut the leaves up into small pieces and lay them out in a single layer on a cookie sheet to dry.

  4. Step 4

    Dry them thoroughly where air circulates freely.

  5. Step 5

    Shred the dried grasses.

  6. Step 6

    Cover the dried grasses and leaves with 2 to 3 quarts cold water in a stockpot.

  7. Step 7

    Bring the water to a low boil for at least an hour.

  8. Step 8

    Remove the pot from the heat when the water is the color you want it to be.

  9. Step 9

    Strain the grass and leaves out.

Tips & Warnings
  • Sometimes boiling doesn't work; it depends on the species you choose. An alternative is to soak the greens in cold water for 72 hours or more.

on 6/21/2009 wow- you could also cut up fresh grass really finely and add a little rubbing alcohol.
