Instructions

    • 1

Drive through your neighborhood to view other garage sale signs. Make notes of their colors, fonts and interesting tag lines used to attract customers. Jot down intersections where you can add a stake or two advertising your location before the designated day. Make sure the intersections receive a lot of traffic, and ask small business owners if you can post your advertisements.

Purchase poster supplies, including colored posters sized 26 by 39 inches, colored markers, nails and wooden stakes. Use the pencils to draw large letters to trace in the colored markers. Write the details of the garage sale including time, location, date and list a few items offered if possible.

Use the ruler to make straight lines for writing the garage sale information. Ensure lines measure 24 inches horizontally. Thicken lines with a permanent marker for better readability; spread the content of the poster so passersby can read, understand and remember the information for the garage sale. After writing the content, consider adding small lists of items available at your sale near the bottom. For instance, write the words "clothes, furniture, toys and more!" so prospects know what to expect.

Nail the wooden stakes in the middle of the posters. Make sure they are symmetrical, balanced and carefully nailed into the group at your designated intersections. You may add glue or other adhesives to ensure the poster remains attached to the stake for at least two to three days before your garage sale. Place one or two stakes at each location to meet the eye of incoming traffic towards your home, in town and in other locations close to your home. Use a two-mile radius to attract traffic in the designated areas.

Tips & Warnings

  • Add arrows to the signs to point drivers to your home.

  • Use colors like red, yellow and green for easy readability.
