How to Sync Google With an iMac

A Google account allows you to do much more than check your email: Users with Google accounts can keep track of contacts, add events to an online calendar and do much, much more. The only elements of your Google account that you can sync with a Mac computer are the email, contact and calendar aspects. If you want to sync these aspects of your Google account with your iMac computer, however, you can do so in a few simple steps.

Gmail With Mail

  • Open the computer's Web browser and navigate to the Google account sign-in page. Type your Google account email and password in the spaces provided and click the "Sign In" button to sign in to your Google account.

  • Click the "Settings" icon in the upper right corner of your Google account home page and select the "Mail Settings" option from the Settings menu. Click the "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" option and select the "Enable IMAP" option. Click the "Save Changes" button to save the changes.

  • Double-click the "Mail" application icon on the computer to launch the application. Click the "Mail" tab and select the "Preferences..." option from the Mail menu. Click the "Accounts" tab, followed by the "+" icon to add a new account.

  • Type your name in the space labeled "Full Name." Type your Gmail email address in the space labeled "Email Address." Type your Gmail account password in the space labeled "Password."

  • Click the "Create" button to create the new Mail account. Your Gmail account will now be synced with the computer's Mail application.

Google Contacts With Address Book

  • Double-click the "Address Book" application icon on the computer to launch the application. Click the "Address Book" tab and select the "Preferences..." option from the Address book menu.

  • Click the "Accounts" tab and place a check mark next to the "Synchronize With Google" option. Read through the Terms and Conditions and click the "Agree" button.

  • Type your Google account email in the space labeled "Google Account." Type your Google account password in the space labeled "Password." Click the "OK" button to sync Address Book with your Google contacts.

Google Calendar With iCal

  • Double-click the "iCal" application icon on the computer to launch the application. Click the "iCal" tab and select the "Preferences..." option from the iCal menu.

  • Click the "Accounts" tab, followed by the "+" icon to add a new account. Type a description for the account and your Google account username and password in the spaces provided.

  • Paste "https://www.google.com/calendar/dav/XXXXX@XXX.COM/user" beneath the "Server Options" heading, replacing "XXXXX@XXX.COM" with your Google account email.

  • Click the "Add" button to sync your Google calendar with the iCal application. Now your Google calendar will be viewable in the iCal application.
