A tamale is a steamed item made of up corn dough, sweet or savory filling that is traditionally wrapped in corn husks or banana leaves. Tamales may date back to pre-Columbian, ancient Mexico, and is still a popular treat today in much of the southwestern United States. In order to eat and enjoy a tamale, you must carefully undo the outer wrapping to access the steaming dish inside. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

      Untie the tie or string on the outter wrapping of the tamale. The tie may vary slightly depending on the cooking method. It may be made from a strip of corn husk or banana leaf. The tamale may also be tied with a simple kitchen string. Untie with your hands or cut with kitchen scissors.

      Unfold the outer layer of the wrapping to expose the tamale. You cannot eat the outer layer.

      Cut into the corn dough and filling with a fork. You probably won't need a knife, as the filling has usually been steamed soft.

      Eat the tamale in the traditional manner, which is to eat it plain. You can also eat the tamale with a side dish such as pinto beans, black beans and rice or a side of salsa.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be careful when you open the tamale wrapping. If it has been freshly cooked, there is a chance that the tamale will be hot and that hot steam will escape the wrapping.
