How to Write a Personal Letter Heading

The personal letter, also called the friendly letter, addresses friends, acquaintances or relatives. You use it in less formal settings than the business letter, and it contains less information. Some people who frequently write personal letters purchase stationary preprinted with their name and address. If you are using blank paper, place the heading on the top right-hand corner of your personal letter.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the street address of your home in the upper right corner of your personal letter starting about two inches from the right edge of the paper. Begin it on the second line if it's on lined paper. If you use a post office box, use that instead of your physical address.

    • 2

Start your city, state and zip code on the next line. Line the first letter of the city name directly under the first number of your street address. Use the U.S. postal system of state abbreviations. Place the zip code after the state.

    • 3

Enter the date on the next line, lining the first letter up directly under the first letter of the city. Spell out the month or use the abbreviation. The date should read month, day and year.
