How to Remove White Foggy Substances Between Double Pane Windows

How to Remove White Foggy Substances Between Double Pane Windows thumbnail
Fogged double panes need replaced.

Double pane windows owe their additional insulating properties as much to the dead space between panes as to the seal created by the double glass. Since the air between the panes is sealed, any time a cloudy substance, or steam gets between panes it indicates that the seal has failed. It is not typically possible to remove the fog without replacing the glass and most manufacturers replace the panes and sash as a unit.

Instructions

  1. Sash Removal

    • 1

Lift the window sash up and locate the release tabs on the top edge of the frame. Press the two tabs toward the middle to release the outside corners and tilt the top of the window toward you.

    • 2

Tilt the window in far enough for the catches to clear the frame and release. Pull the window all the way in, until the sash is perpendicular to the window frame.

    • 3

Shift your grip so your fingers are underneath and your thumbs are on top. Slide your hands in toward the wall until you grip the bottom of the window, just above the bottom corners.

    • 4

Lift up sharply on one side to pop the bottom pivot out of its track. Tilt the window up on that side slightly. Push up firmly to snap the other pivot out of the track and lift the sash clear of the window.

    • 5

Locate the label on the side edge of the window sash and use the contact number to call for a replacement. Provide the company with the necessary model and size numbers and order a replacement sash.

    Installing New Sash

    • 6

Lay the new sash flat, with the bottom toward the window. Tilt the window with the right side higher and set it into the frame, pressing the pivot on the lower left of the window into its slot in the window jamb. Tilt the right side down and snap that pivot into place as well.

    • 7

Tilt the window up until the catches make contact with the window jamb. Locate the two tabs on top of the window and press them toward the center until the catches are clear of the jamb. Tilt the window up into position and release the tabs to lock it into the frame.

    • 8

Run the window up and down a few times to ensure proper movement. Return the window to the down position and lock the sash for security.
