How to Make a Demon Costume

How to Make a Demon Costume thumbnail
Black and red are traditional demon colors.

Demon costumes let you represent the trick in "trick or treat" and work well for adults and kids alike. Let out the little devil inside with a frightening and budget-friendly Halloween costume that draws on your own wardrobe. The traditional demon is Lucifer, or the devil, but you can create your own imaginary demon to really make the costume yours. Practice an evil cackle, a sneer and a menacing look to personify the demon on fright night.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase demon horns, a demon mask and a trident, or three-pronged spear, from a costume shop. If you don't want a mask, you can paint your face with face paint. You could also make a homemade trident from a broom handle and aluminum foil to keep the costume cost down.

    • 2

Pull together clothes from your wardrobe to make the base costume. If you're a female demon, wear a velour or crushed velvet dress in fiery shades of red or black or black pants and a black or red T-shirt. If the dress is short, pick up black stockings to go underneath them. As an alternate costume idea, look for "fiery" garments with flames on them. If you're a male demon, consider a black or red robe or tunic with pants or sweatpants underneath. For shoes, consider tall boots, high heels or plain leather shoes. Sneakers are not demon wear.

Put on your base costume of red or black clothes and shoes. Put your face mask on and your horns. If you're painting your face, color the whole face red or black. Pick up your trident in your hand.

    • 4

Add accessories for a ghoulish feel. Think skull rings or necklaces, thick chains to represent the chains of hell, bat-shaped earrings, pentagrams or anything else with an evil vibe.

Tips & Warnings

  • While black and red are traditional colors, you can take the demon costume out of the box. Come up with your own evil creature and give her a story, a weapon and props. Stick with vivid dark colors, like emerald green or royal purple. Pastel colors don't work so well for demons.
