Angel costumes are one of the most-used costume ideas for Halloween and other costume events. Many plays and church events use angel costumes. As an alternative to the traditional white angels, you can also create black angel wings that add some edginess to the traditional angel costume. With black angel wings you can become a fallen angel, the angel of death or any other dark angel that you can come up with. These wings will take about one full day to complete, so make sure to allot enough time to the project before you have to wear the costume.

Step 1

Draw the outline of one angel wing onto a large piece of cardboard. You can make the wings as large or as small as you wish. Make the top of the wing the widest point of the wing. Gradually taper the wing down to a point at the end. On the inside corner middle of the wing, add a four inch long by three inch wide rectangular tab. Cut out the wing.

Step 2

Lay the first wing over another piece of cardboard and cut out a second wing. Cut out the inside of the wings leaving a 1-inch thick outline along the outside edge of the wing. Leave a center cross piece of cardboard at the thickest point of the wing for extra stability.

Step 3

Cover the wings with the pantyhose or stretchy netting. Glue the hose or netting in place along the frame of the wing.

Step 4

Overlap the tab extensions of the wings and glue them together. Use four paper fasteners along the four corners of the extensions to hold the wings together.

Step 5

Place a piece of wire between the two inside edges of the wings for added stability. Hold the wire in place with duct tape. Add a second wire near the bottom of the wings.

Step 6

Glue feathers onto both sides of the wings. Start from the bottom of the wing and glue a line of feathers across the frame. Continue to add layers from the bottom up overlapping each layer by about ½ of an inch. Allow the glue to dry completely.

Step 7

Punch four holes into the corners of the wing extension tabs. Thread four pieces of ribbon through the holes and secure with knots. Use the ribbons to tie the wings to your back.
