Grandmother's Flower Garden is just one of the more well-known quilt patterns made exclusively from hexagons. Hexagon quilts can look charming and old-fashioned or stark and modern, depending on the fabrics you use. The one thing they have in common is a need for hundreds of fabric hexagons. Instead of cutting each shape out by hand, take advantage of a rotary cutting technique and save significant time and effort before you start your quilt.
Things You'll Need
- Cotton quilt fabric
- Rotary cutting mat
- Rotary cutting ruler
- Rotary cutter
- Equilateral triangle ruler
- Post-it Notes
Cut strips from your fabric that are the same width as your desired hexagon size. Use a rotary cutter, ruler and board to make sure the strips are straight and even.
Fold a strip in half lengthwise. This will give you a long, thin strip of two layers. Lay the folded strip on the table in front of you on top of the cutting mat with the fold at the bottom.
Lay the triangle ruler on top of the strip. Move the ruler until the exact top point touches the edge opposite the fold. Place a Post-it Note across the ruler to mark a line where the folded edge of the strip is underneath.
Slide the triangle ruler forward until the Post-it Note lines up with the upper edge of the strip. Cut the strip with a rotary cutter along the right and left edges of the ruler. When you open the cut-off piece, it will be a perfect hexagon.
Slide the ruler along the strip and cut another hexagon next to where you cut the first one. Continue in this manner until you have cut all the hexagons for your quilt.
