How to Appeal a Failed TAKS Test in Texas thumbnail
The Grade Placement Committee makes the final decision on grade level advancement.

The Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) testing of public school students is required in the State of Texas. Students must demonstrate proficiency on TAKS tests in order to advance to the next grade level.

Instructions

    • 1

      Request to meet with the Grade Placement Committee to appeal your child's retention. You will receive a letter from your child's school notifying you of your right to appeal to the GPC. Sign the attached form and check the box to indicate that you will attend.

      Make a copy of the "Confirmation of Participation in Grade Placement Committee" form for your records. Enclose the form in the attached return envelope.

    • 3

      Deliver in person or mail the form to the principal's office at your child's school. Return the form within five business days of receiving the notification.

Tips & Warnings

  • School officials allow students three opportunities to perform satisfactory on TAKS tests before they are placed in retention.

  • The GPC members consist of principals, teachers and the parent or guardian of the child.
