How to Make a Universal Card Payment

AT&T's Universal Card is a popular choice for a credit card because it combines a cash-back reward card with a calling card. When it is time to pay your monthly bill, the company offers convenient options, including a one-time Internet payment or a phone payment. AT&T reserves the right to charge a service fee on a phone payment transaction, but the Internet payment is free.

Things You'll Need

  • Phone or computer
  • Blank check

Phone Payment

  • Call the 24-hour Customer Service line at 1-800-423-4343.

  • Enter your credit card number by either speaking it or entering it on your phone keypad. You will then hear your card balance, cash advance availability, minimum payment amount and date by which the payment is due.

  • Say "Make a Payment" at the next voice prompt. Answer the security question the automatic prompt requests; it is usually asking for the three-digit number on the back of your credit card.

  • Look at your blank check and locate the bank's routing number, the nine-digit number on the bottom left corner. Either speak or type the routing number to enter it. Enter your checking account number in the same manner. The voice prompt will tell you your minimum payment amount and ask how much you want to pay. Speak or type the payment amount.

  • Enter the check number you would like to use to make the payment. Wait for the transaction to be processed. Note the confirmation number that the automatic voice prompt gives and void the check used to make the payment.

Online Payment

  • Navigate to the AT&T Universal Card web page. If you have already registered on the website, enter your User ID and password and click "Sign On."

If you have not registered on the website click "Register" next to "First time user?" Make sure you have your credit card with you. Type the credit card number into the entry box. On the next screen, enter your name as it appears on the card, the three-digit code on the back of the card, the security word you created when you applied for the credit card and the last four digits of your Social Security Number. Then, create a User ID and password. Enter your preferred email address and mobile phone number. Click "Continue." The next screen will confirm your information. Click "Confirm" and you now have online access to your account.

  • Click the green "Make a Payment" button that appears on the home screen just below the payment date listing. Alternatively, click "Payment" on the upper task bar and then "Make a Payment" in the drop-down menu.

  • Choose to pay the amount of your last statement balance, the minimum payment due or another amount. If it's a different amount, enter the dollar number in the text box. Select the checking account to be debited if you have entered that information in the past.

To set up a payment account, click "Edit Your Payment Account Information" on the payment page. In the new screen, choose the type of account: checking/money market or savings. Enter your bank's routing number and your bank account number, found on the bottom of the blank check; the website shows an image of the numbers' locations on your check. On the next screen, you need to verify your identity by entering the three-digit security code on the card's signature panel as well as your security word you provided when applying for the card. Click "Continue" and then "Authorize." Navigate back to the payment page to continue the payment process.

  • Choose the date on which you would like the money to be debited from your bank account. Note that your payment due date is circled in red on the drop-down calendar. Click "Verify Information" and re-check the payment amount and date. Click "Authorize" and note the confirmation number. AT&T also emails you a record of the payment and confirmation number.
