Screen brightness is the number one factor in determining the energy consumed by a computer monitor. When you're on the go with your Dell Vostro 1000 laptop you can eke out more time computing while using the battery by turning down the intensity of the screen's backlight and reducing the brightness. Dell has created special function keys to make adjusting the LCD screen brightness a quick, easy task that only takes a few seconds.

  • Press and hold the "Fn" key located in the bottom left of the Vostro's keyboard. While holding the "Fn" key press the up arrow key on the opposite side of the keyboard. The brightness will increase one step for every time you press the up key. Release both keys when you're done. If the screen doesn't get any brighter when you press the keys then it's already at its maximum level.

  • Press and hold the "Fn" key and press the down arrow key to reduce the brightness. The brightness will drop one level for every time you press the key. Release both keys when you're done. If the screen doesn't get any darker it's already at it's minimum level.

  • Press the "Windows Key" with the windows logo on it which is next to the "Fn" key. While holding the "Windows Key" press "X" to launch the Windows Mobility Center. Under "Display Brightness" click the slider and move it to the left to make the screen dimmer and to the right to make it brighter.
