Decoupaging with newspaper is easy and fun. The word decoupage comes from the French word "decouper", meaning "to cut out." Simply, decoupage is gluing paper cut-outs onto a surface. You can decoupage almost any surface with newspaper including wood, plastic, ceramics, soaps, and even candles. Arrange images and newsprint in an orderly fashion, or overlapping in a random design.
Step 1
Clean the item you are going to decoupage; there should not be any dirt or dust on the surface. If you are going to paint the item first, wait 24 hours for the paint to dry.

Step 2
Cut or tear your images and print from the newspaper. Cut the paper at an angle to give the paper a beveled edge. This will make a smooth transition from one piece of paper to the next.
Step 3
Paint only the place for your first cut-out with Mod Podge. Place the paper on top of the Mod Podge, smoothing out any bubbles or wrinkles with your fingers. Wipe away any excess glue with a damp cloth.
Step 4
Paint a layer of Mod Podge on top of the paper. Repeat this process until your item is entirely decoupaged.
Step 5
Paint Mod Podge over the entire project. Allow this to dry for 5 to 6 hours before applying a coat of acrylic sealant to the entire project.
