How to Use an AHA Peel
AHA peels are one of the most effective anti-aging items on the market today. The peels work by gently exfoliating the top, dull layer of skin so a new, fresh layer comes to the surface. Using at-home peels regularly can also save you money by reducing your need for visits to the dermatologist. However, when misused, AHA peels can cause problems such as sensitivity or sun damage. Learn how to use an AHA peel properly and you'll be on your way to a youthful, healthy glow in no time. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Do a patch test on your skin with the AHA peel. Apply a dime-size amount of the peel to the inside of your elbow. A mild burning sensation is normal, but if the area becomes inflamed, painful or you break out in hives, wash the AHA peel off immediately. Discontinue use if you have a negative reaction.

Apply the peel according to packaging directions. Cover your entire face with a thin layer and avoid getting it in your eyes. Use a cotton pad to apply it if your peel kit does not contain pre-moistened pads. Leave the peel on for as long as the directions state. If the directions do not give an allotted time, leave it on for five to eight minutes.

Apply the neutralizer that comes with the AHA peel. If your kit does not have a neutralizer, make your own by mixing 1 tablespoon baking soda with water and cover your face with it. Leave the paste on for one minute and then wash it off thoroughly with a clean washcloth.

Repeat the process as needed, but no more than once a week for best results.

Tips & Warnings
If your skin reacts badly to the AHA peel, look for a BHA peel which contains salicylic acid as the active ingredient. BHA peels are gentler and better for sensitive skin.
Wear sunscreen each time you leave the house for two weeks after using anAHA peel. Its active ingredient makes your skin more sensitive and more prone to sun damage.
If you are using a prescription retinoid, do not use an AHA peel unless performed under the supervision of a dermatologist.
Flush eyes thoroughly with water if you accidentally get the peel in your eyes.
