How to Write an Analytical Research Paper

Save

An analytical research paper has one main goal: for a student to ask a question and use research to come up with an educated answer. The goal of an analytical paper is not to persuade someone to believe what you believe, but instead to present information in a logical way and communicate your conclusions to your audience. After organizing their ideas in a solid outline, students should begin the writing process, making sure that they leave as much time as possible for revisions.

  • Write a strong introduction paragraph with an "attention-getter" as the first sentence in order to ensure that you captivate your audience. The attention-getter can be a quote from the movie or book that your paper is about. It can also be an interesting, little-known fact if your paper is not on a movie or novel.

  • Develop a strong thesis statement to be included in your introduction paragraph. If your topic was created by asking a question, then the thesis statement should be an answer to this question. It is important that the thesis summarizes the main ideas that your paper will convey to its audience.

  • Write your main body paragraphs, focusing on a different aspects of your analysis in each paragraph. It is imperative that the body paragraphs of your analytical research essay are well constructed and organized. If they are not organized properly and you try to discuss too many topics in one paragraph, you may lose the attention of your reader.

  • Summarize your findings with a strong conclusion paragraph. Your conclusion paragraph should include your thesis statement, which will help tie together your entire essay. You should also come to some sort of conclusion about the analysis of your research in this section of your paper. Remember, you want your audience to take something away from your paper.

  • Cite your work. A research paper almost always requires a Works Cited page, where you give credit to those works that you used in your research. This section is extremely important, as it will help make sure you avoid plagiarism, which is a very serious offense.
