How to Stop an Air Rifle From Losing Air

Air rifles are ideal weapons for youngsters to learn the basics of rifle marksmanship. Many shooting enthusiasts--even in adulthood--still enjoy shooting and target practice with an air rifle. In order for an air rifle to operate at an optimal performance level, air must not be allowed to escape from the compression chamber. The compression chamber is sealed by an air piston and ring. If your air rifle is losing air pressure, changing out and lubricating the piston seal will correct the problem.

Things You'll Need

  • Air rifle owner's manual
  • Replacement piston seal and O-ring
  • Compression oil (specified by owner's manual)

Instructions

    • 1

Unload the weapon completely. Visually inspect the chamber to ensure that no ammunition is present.

    • 2

Disassemble the rifle and access the air piston seal. Since all air rifles vary in design, consult your manual for disassembly specifics and location of parts.

    • 3

Remove the faulty piston seal and O-ring if they're damaged. Replace them with the new seal and ring. Reassemble the weapon.

    • 4

Place a drop of the appropriate lubrication for your model of air rifle in the compression chamber port. Ensure that you apply lubrication to the compression chamber port after a few hundred shots, or what your owner's manual specifies. This will keep the seal from drying out and losing air pressure.

Tips & Warnings

  • Clean and check your air rifle once a month or periodically to ensure optimal performance.

  • Never attempt maintenance on a loaded air rifle.

  • Never point a loaded air rifle at anything that you do not intend to shoot or kill.
